Women with high levels of the
‘sunshine’ vitamin D,
more likely to survive Breast Cancer

Women with breast cancer who take the ‘sunshine’ vitamin D supplement are twice as likely to survive the disease as women low in the nutrient.  The vitamin blocks tumour growth by improving communication between healthy cells.Taking 4,000 IUs of vitamin D supplements every day should be enough to protect the breast cancer sufferer and prevent the disease becoming a killer, say researchers at the University of California, San Diego school of medicine.  This is far above the recommended daily allowance (RDA), however, which is set at just 600 IUs and 800 IUs for people over the age of 70.The evidence for high levels of vitamin D and breast cancer survival is so overwhelming that the researchers stopped their study early, and have recommended that the supplement should be part of the therapy. They made their discovery when they reanalysed the evidence from five studies that involved 4,443 breast cancer patients. The women with 30 nanograms of vitamin D per millilitre of blood serum (ng/ml) were twice as likely to survive their breast cancer  as  those with just 17 ng/ml, which is the average level of vitamin D blood serum in the US.It also works as a preventative.  Women who had 50 ng/ml levels of the vitamin in their blood serum also had 50 per cent lower risk of developing the cancer.

Compound in figs and celery attack HER2 breast cancer cells

A compound in figs and celery can attack aggressive breast tumors caused by the HER2 protein, which is responsible for around a quarter of all breast cancer cases.  The compound, psoralen, blocks the protein’s receptors that fuel the growth of tumors in breast cancer, and ovarian and gastric cancers and solid tumors. It’s already known that psoralen can fight lymphoma and skin problems such as psoriasis, especially when activated by UV light, but the latest discovery opens up new ways to treat HER2 positive breast cancer. Researchers at Duke University said the discovery came as a complete surprise when they were carrying out laboratory tests on cancer cells.  The compound blocked signals that were coming from the HER2 proteins. And it could be that it is more effective than chemotherapy agents such as lapatinib and trastuzumab that are routinely used for HER2 cancers.  The drugs can target only the HER receptors that are outside the cell, but cannot identify those inside the cell nucleus.  Psoralen can also attack those in the cell, making it far more effective.

   7 Reasons to Eat Blueberries

  1. Provide antioxidants.
  1. Are a healthy, low-glycemic-index
  2. Anthocyanins, the pigments that make blueberries blue, are potent antioxidants:  half-cup of blueberries provides the antioxidant power of five servings of peas, carrots, apples, squash or broccoli.
  3. Especially good choice for diabetics.
  4. Are a source of vitamin C, important for supporting your immune system.
  5. Help meet your daily fiber needs with two grams per half-cup serving of blueberries.
  6. Have shown promise in addressing the untoward effects of aging: animal studies have demonstrated improved motor skills and a reversal of age-related short-term memory loss associated with consuming blueberries.
  7. May offer various other health benefits ranging from preventing cancer and defending against urinary tract infections to protecting the brain from stroke damage and reducing heart disease risks.

Health Benefits of Broccoli

Broccoli contains glucoraphanin, which the body processes into the anti-cancer compound sulforaphane. This compound rids the body of H. pylori, a bacterium found to highly increase the risk of gastric cancer. Furthermore, broccoli contains indole-3-carbinol, a powerful antioxidant compound and anti-carcinogen found to not only hinder the growth of breast, cervical and prostate cancer, but also boosts liver function.Broccoli shares these cancer fighting, immune boosting properties with other cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage.
2. Cholesterol Reduction
Like many whole foods, broccoli is packed with soluble fiber that draws cholesterol out of your body.
3. Reducing Allergy Reaction and Inflammation
Broccoli is a particularly rich source of kaempferol and isothiocyanates, both anti-inflammatory phyto nutrients. Research has shown the ability of kaempferol to lessen the impact of allergy-related substances on our body. Broccoli even has significant amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, which are well know as an anti-inflammatory.
4. Powerful Antioxidant
Of all the cruciferous vegetables, broccoli stands out as the most concentrated source of vitamin C, plus the flavonoids necessary for vitamin C to recycle effectively. Also concentrated in broccoli are the carotenoids lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, other powerful antioxidants.
5. Bone Health
Broccoli contains high levels of both calcium and vitamin K, both of which are important for bone health and prevention of osteoporosis.
6. Heart Health
The anti-inflammatory properties of sulforaphane, one of the isothiocyanates (ITCs) in broccoli, may be able to prevent (or even reverse) some of the damage to blood vessel linings that can be caused by inflammation due to chronic blood sugar problems.
7. DetoxificationGlucoraphanin, gluconasturtiin and glucobrassicin are special phytonutrients that support all steps in the body’s detox process, including activation, neutralization and elimination of unwanted contaminants. These three are in the perfect combination in broccoli.  Broccoli also contains isothiocyanates (which you read about in inflammation) which help control the detox process at a genetic level.8. Diet AidBroccoli is a smart carb and is high in fiber, which aids in digestion, prevents constipation, maintains low blood sugar, and curbs overeating. Furthermore, a cup of broccoli has as much protein as a cup of rice or corn with half the calories.
9. Alkalizes Your BodyLike many vegetables, broccoli helps keep your whole body less acidic, which has a host of health benefits.

Truly The Wonder Molecule.
